Under a groundbreaking "northbound" travel scheme, Hong Kong motorists are crossing into the Chinese mainland in record numbers – and increasingly in vehicles built right in the Greater Bay Area. On a recent trip to Guangzhou, a group of EV owners from Hong Kong toured XPeng's next-gen factory and test-drove its XNGP semi-autonomous driving system, currently in regulatory talks for possible rollout in Hong Kong. With Chinese EVs now rivaling foreign brands in tech, design and price, drivers like firefighter Taki Wong say it's time to back homegrown innovation. Xpeng's Hong Kong regional chief Jerry Tam adds the city is a critical launchpad in the company's global strategy – and the perfect proving ground for its smart driving tech.
