U.S. President Donald Trump on July 31 signed an executive order imposing new "reciprocal tariffs" on dozens of countries and regions, with South Africa facing a 30% duty.
In an interview with China Media Group, South African economist Azar Jammine said the move reflects more than just economic considerations. He argued that Washington is using trade policy as a tool of political coercion, targeting countries that do not align with U.S. diplomatic positions.
