A landslide triggered by heavy rain on Wednesday destroyed several houses in the southern Chinese city of Guangzhou, trapping 14 people under the debris. By 7 p.m., eight people had been rescued and taken to the hospital. More than 600 emergency workers were dispatched, and nearly 1,000 residents in the area were safely evacuated. Inspection teams have been surveying nearby slopes for signs of further instability. Rescue efforts are ongoing as Guangdong continues to reel from some of the heaviest downpours in decades.
