Nearly seven in 10 of all refugees under the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees' mandate and other people in need of international protection come from just five countries. One of those countries is Syria. After 14 years of war, Syrian refugee Majed Habeeb returned to his ruined hometown, Darayya, to rebuild his life. He shares his emotional journey back to his home nation after Bashar al-Assad's government fell in 2024. Although his home is destroyed and war injuries cost him his livelihood, he draws strength from helping his community. Habeeb's story reflects resilience, hope and an unshakable sense of belonging.
