Record rains in Guangdong: Causes, rescue efforts and evacuation

01:09

South China's Guangdong Province endured extreme monsoon rains, unprecedented in both scale and duration, from August 4 to 6. The province was gripped by widespread flooding, landslides and urban water logging. Over 75,700 residents have been evacuated across the region as search-and-rescue efforts continue. Geologists warn of delayed landslides and flash flooding in mountainous and low-lying areas. Many villagers are still sheltered with relatives or in emergency facilities. Authorities are conducting secondary hazard assessments before permitting return. Guangdong remains in monsoon season through October, with up to three typhoons forecast in August.
