Torrential rain that began on August 7 triggered flash floods in Yuzhong County, Gansu Province, northwest China, stranding 4,000 people. At least 10 people have died with 33 missing in the extreme weather event. About 3 kilometers of the river channel had been searched by midnight Friday for the missing. The provincial water resources department raised its flood emergency response to the highest level. After 14 hours of continuous work, some firefighters slept on the ground with rocks as pillows to battle fatigue.
