UEFA Champions League titleholders Paris Saint-Germain fought back from a 2-0 deficit with five minutes left to force a draw, and then edged Europa League winners Tottenham Hotspur 4-3 on penalty kicks to lift the UEFA Super Cup in Udine, Italy, on Wednesday evening.

Tottenham, who finished 17th in the English Premier League last season, took the lead after Micky Van de Ven scored off a rebound in the 39th minute. The EPL side doubled their advantage when Cristian Romero noded in a header three minutes into the second half against the French Ligue 1 side, who hoisted their first Champions League trophy in May.

But PSG were saved by a pair of substitutes, as Lee Kang-in pulled a goal back in the 85th minute, before Goncalo Ramos headed in the equalizer four minutes into stoppage time. That forced a 2-2 draw, followed by a tense penalty shootout.

After Mathys Tel and Micky van de Ven missed from the spot for Tottenham, Nuno Mendes stepped up to drill the winner for the Parisians. PSG's players wasted no time in storming the field in celebration, knowing they had etched their names in the history books as the first French side to lift the season-opening continental prize.
