China defeated South Korea 79-71 in the FIBA Asia Cup quarterfinals on Thursday, advancing to the last four at the continental tournament in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, for the first time in a decade.

Hu Jinqiu led China with game highs of 23 points and 11 rebounds, while 20-year-old teammate Wang Junjie contributed 21 points, including 15 in the first half.

"Sorry about my left leg cramping in the fourth quarter, but thrilled with the team win," Wang said. "We shut down their key player, and I hope we take the title in the end."

"It is not easy to face South Korea, but we played hard, and claimed the victory," Hu added. "Our opponents caused a lot of trouble for us, but we stayed united as one, throughout the 40 minutes. Everybody, whether on or off the court, encouraged and reminded each other to stay calm. Our Chinese team showed fighting spirit while facing challenges in this game, and finally, we reached the semifinals."

South Korea missed 21 of 24 three-pointers, but sank 20 of 26 free throw attempts. They trailed 46-35 shortly before halftime, but cut the deficit to 77-71 in the closing stages of the fourth quarter.

Lee Hyun-jung led South Korea with 22 points, followed by 15 from Ha Yun-gi.

In the evening's other game, New Zealand edged Lebanon 90-86. They will face China in the semifinals on Saturday, while Australia and Iran meet to decide the other spot in the final.
