On August 15, the anniversary of Japan's WWII surrender, two maritime rescue films hit theaters – but their messages could not be more different. "Dongji Rescue" retells the true story of the 1942 Lisbon Maru tragedy, where Chinese fishermen risked their lives to save British POWs from Japanese cruelty. "Yukikaze," by contrast, whitewashes an invading fleet as heroes. In an age when history is still contested, the stories we believe shape whether the past is remembered – or rewritten.
