Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Saturday he will meet U.S. President Donald Trump next week in Washington after a summit between Trump and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin ended without a deal on a ceasefire in the Ukraine conflict.
The remarks came after a lengthy phone call Zelenskyy had with Trump, during which Trump briefed him on his meeting with Putin and the key points of their discussion.
"What's important is that the strength of the United States has a bearing on the course of events," Zelenskyy said in a statement.
Expressing gratitude for Trump's invitation, the Ukrainian leader said he would use the meeting to discuss "all the details of ending the killing and the war."
Zelenskyy also said he supports Trump's proposal for a trilateral meeting between Ukraine, the United States and Russia. "Key issues can be discussed at the level of national leaders, and that the trilateral format is highly appropriate."
He also reiterated that Europeans must join the U.S. in participating at every stage of ensuring reliable security guarantees.
The phone call, which lasted an hour and a half, included European leaders after Zelenskyy and Trump first spoke one-on-one.
"We will continue to coordinate positions with all our partners," he said.
