Every Chinese knows "Along the Songhua River," a lament for lost homes and a cry of defiance. Named after the "mother river" of the northeastern provinces, the song recounts the darkest years when China's northeast was occupied by Japanese invaders and the fierce resistance of the Chinese people. Born from Japan's invasion in 1931, the song began with blood and tears, but ignited the will and might of a nation to fight on.
