A pair of Chinese teenagers, 18-year-old Yang Peiqi and 17-year-old Xu Haibo, did their country proud by claiming two medals at the World Aquatics Junior Swimming Championships in Otopeni, Romania, on Wednesday.
Yang finished first in the women's 800-meter freestyle final after outpacing Agostina Hein of Argentina and Kseniia Misharina of Russia. Yang was in second place after the first 300 meters, moved into lead on the next lap, and kept extending her advantage until finishing the race in 8:22.93, securing her first individual title at the competition.
Xu earned silver in the men's 200-meter freestyle in 1:46.67, touching the wall 1.52 seconds behind Italy's Carlos D'Ambrosio, who grabbed gold while setting a new Championships record. Japan's Raito Numata rounded out the podium with bronze.
