In northwest Syria, over 700 abandoned Byzantine settlements, known as the Dead Cities or the Ancient Villages of Northern Syria as listed on UNESCO's World Heritage List, are now partly occupied by refugees fleeing Syria's decade-long civil war.
After the fall of Bashar al-Assad's government in December 2024, many displaced residents returned home, while some stayed, raising concerns that their presence might cause irreversible damage to these ancient sites.
