Plastic pollution is a global challenge, and the food delivery sector is a significant contributor to this issue. Meituan Green Mountain Initiative, an initiative from one of China's major food delivery platforms, offers solutions by reducing, replacing and recycling plastics through innovative collaborations.

One of its key solutions, Box Transformer, addresses the difficulty of recycling food delivery containers. The program leverages big data to optimize collection spots, provides support for infrastructure improvement and conducts public awareness campaigns on waste sorting.

By collaborating with and providing support to local recycling partners, the initiative has created a standardized, large-scale and high-value supply chain for recycling. It has collected 37,000 tonnes of containers across 24 cities in 20 provinces in China since 2021.

Meituan Green Mountain Initiative also seeks solutions through technological innovation. In partnership with Donghua University, it has developed a groundbreaking method to transform recycled polypropylene containers into high-value textiles.

The program created ultra-fine denier and high-strength polypropylene fibers from recycled containers, which can then be used to make products like quick-drying sports T-shirts, giving plastic waste a new and valuable purpose.
