The Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) marked 2024 as the "Year of Ecology," strengthening cooperation on environmental protection and climate change. Building on this, 2025 has been designated the "Year of Sustainable Development," uniting members to promote ecological protection and new growth drivers.

Recent data highlight diverse progress among SCO members. Protected terrestrial and marine areas in 2024 ranged from 4.5 percent of total land in India to 22.6 percent in Tajikistan, with China at 14.7 percent and Russia at 8.6 percent.

China reported notable achievements in ecological restoration. In 2024, the country's forest coverage rate exceeded 25 percent, with forest stock surpassing 20 billion cubic meters.
