Shang Juncheng retires injured after falling behind 7-6, 1-6, 6-3, 3-0 in first round

On the men's side at Flushing Meadows, China's Shang Juncheng faced Italy's Mattia Bellucci in the first round, and dropped a first set tiebreaker 7-0.

Shang roared back in the second with his full array of shots, highlighted by a series of crisp backhands, as he dominated the frame 6-1.

But Bellucci regained control in the third. The 65th-ranked Italian converted his second set point opportunity with a powerful forehand on the line to prevail 6-3, regaining the overall lead.

The 24-year-old maintained his momentum in the fourth, chasing down a lob before bulleting a forehand passing shot to break for a 3-0 lead.

Shang then retired due to a left foot injury that he has been dealing with for some time. The World No. 111 lost his fifth match of the season, with three of those defeats ending in retirements.

"At the beginning, my goal was keeping healthy and finishing the match. But unfortunately, I failed to do it today," said Shang. "I think I played good tennis, but my fitness was not good enough to complete a match. I have a severely bruised left foot. So I cannot finish a professional tennis match under that circumstance, let alone a Grand Slam match. I'm still finding the cause of this injury and I will tell fans after fixing it."
