The Chinese Foreign Ministry has lodged serious representations to Japan over its negative remarks regarding China's upcoming grand gathering to mark the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People's War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War.

Speaking at a regular press briefing on Tuesday, the ministry's spokesperson Guo Jiakun said the aim of the commemoration is to remember history and cherish peace.

"Any country that faces history with integrity, draws lessons from history, and is truly committed to peaceful development will not doubt or even object to this," he said.

Correctly understanding and treating history is an important prerequisite for Japan's post-war return to the international community, the political foundation for Japan to develop relations with its neighboring countries, and an important criterion for testing whether Japan can abide by its commitment to peaceful development, Guo noted.

Guo urged Japan to face squarely and reflect on its history of aggression, make a clean break with militarism, stick to the path of peaceful development, and earnestly respect the feelings of the people of China and other victimized countries.
