Chinese Minister of Science and Technology Yin Hejun unveiled plaques for 19 national key laboratories in Hong Kong and Macao this week, marking a major step forward in strengthening scientific collaboration between the two special administrative regions (SARs) and the mainland.
On Monday, 15 laboratories in Hong Kong were awarded national key laboratory status. At the ceremony, Hong Kong SAR Chief Executive John Lee reaffirmed the government's commitment to building the city into an international innovation and technology hub. He stressed the importance of actively engaging Hong Kong's universities and laboratories in national research programs to boost capabilities and accelerate integration into the national innovation system. The laboratories, many affiliated with top global universities, highlight Hong Kong's research strength.
Yin said the recognition reflected national trust in Hong Kong's innovation potential and development prospects, encouraging the laboratories to pursue original innovations and breakthroughs in key technologies.
Noting that the practice of "One Country, Two Systems" has entered a new stage, Zhou Ji, director of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the HKSAR, said technological innovation must be prioritized to drive high-quality development.
On Tuesday, four laboratories in Macao were awarded plaques. Macao SAR Chief Executive Sam Hou Fai said the laboratories, rooted locally but serving the nation, has already made significant progress in research, technology transfer, talent cultivation, and international cooperation. He pledged stronger synergy among science, talent, and industry to contribute to China's goal of becoming a science and technology powerhouse.
Yin affirmed that the inclusion of Macao's laboratories into the national key laboratory system marks a milestone, urging them to continue striving for further achievements.
