The China Meteorological Administration (CMA) announced three major initiatives on Thursday to deepen bilateral cooperation with Arab countries.
The announcement was made during a meteorological cooperation forum at the China-Arab States Expo in Yinchuan, capital of Northwest China's Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region.
The measures include jointly establishing a meteorological satellite data application center with the United Arab Emirates (UAE), co-developing the MAZU early warning system with Jordan and other countries, and partnering with Egypt on artificial intelligence-driven meteorological models. According to the CMA, these efforts mark a new stage in China-Arab meteorological collaboration and in mechanisms for tackling global climate challenges.

The CMA and the UAE Meteorological Department will focus on data sharing, remote sensing application planning and joint talent training for the new satellite data center. Currently, China's Fengyun meteorological satellite data platform serves 17 Arab states. Meanwhile, the MAZU system aims to provide tailored early warning solutions for countries like Jordan, leveraging cloud platforms, satellite data and AI algorithms. The joint AI meteorological model with Egypt is expected to improve disaster warning accuracy and boost AI applications in regional meteorological services.
In a video speech, Chen Zhenlin, director of the CMA, emphasized China's commitment to supporting disaster prevention in the region through Fengyun satellites and the MAZU system.
He said China will work with Arab partners to build an open cooperation framework, strengthen disaster prevention and mitigation capabilities on both sides, and make greater contributions to safeguarding the well-being of people in the region.
Abdulla Ahmed Al Mandous, president of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), praised China's contributions to climate resilience and expressed support for expanding AI and remote sensing cooperation.
The cooperation forum brought together meteorological officials from China and nine Arab nations, including the UAE, Jordan, Yemen, Iraq, Egypt, Morocco, Qatar and Libya, along with WMO representatives.
