During World War II, many Australian and Dutch prisoners of war were transferred to China's Hainan Island after being captured by the Japanese army in Indonesia. They weathered hardships with local Chinese people, both during and after the war. The Gull Force Memorial was later established in Hainan to commemorate the mutual suffering and cooperation.
