Our WWII Memories: Language was his weapon

While thousands of drivers raced against time on the Burma Road – the vital artery during the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, carved from mountains at immense human cost – interpreters like Zhao Yansun were the critical link. The road was the main channel for transporting international aid into China, and language was essential to keep this lifeline open. 

Though still a student too young to enlist, Zhao became a military interpreter, a crucial role in bridging Chinese and allied forces and ensuring the flow of supplies that sustained a nation at war. He was one of countless ordinary people who showed extraordinary courage in the face of history.
