Hong Fenglin, a 96-year-old veteran, now lives in Dezhou, east China's Shandong Province. The invading forces claimed his grandfather's life, planting in him a deep resolve to resist Japanese aggression.
In the winter of 1944, the arrival of the Eighth Route Army brought a glimmer of hope to his war-torn village. At just 16, Hong joined the troops without hesitation. Lacking proper equipment and often short of food, they marched by night and hid by day.
Today, as he touches his commemorative medals for the 60th, 70th and 80th anniversaries of the Chinese People''s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, Hong's eyes shine with tears. "These honors from the country are recognition for us veterans," he says.
Salute to the unyielding spirit and the unforgettable years!
