Chinese President Xi Jinping on Monday called on Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) members to uphold multilateralism and defend UN-centered international system. 

President Xi made the remarks while addressing the "SCO Plus" meeting in Tianjin.

The Chinese president called on the SCO to step up and play a leading role, and set an example in carrying out the Global Governance Initiative.

"We should uphold the vision of global governance featuring extensive consultation and joint contribution for shared benefit, strengthen solidarity and coordination, and oppose unilateralism."

He also called on efforts to safeguard the status and authority of the UN and ensure its irreplaceable, key role in global governance.
