South America's World Cup qualifying campaign wraps up Sept. 4 and 9, with Argentina already assured of its place after dominating the standings with 35 points. The defending champions, led by Lionel Messi, are untouchable at the top and will host Venezuela at Buenos Aires' Monumental stadium in what will be Messi's final home qualifier before next year's tournament in the United States, Mexico and Canada.
For Argentina, the focus is both on closing the qualifiers at home and on preparing for what could be Messi's last World Cup. The 38-year-old captain has not set a retirement date, but confirmed his international career will end after the tournament. Argentina's challenge now lies in defending its crown on North American soil, where it will arrive as one of the favourites.
Ecuador and Brazil have also clinched qualification, leaving Uruguay, Paraguay and Colombia in strong positions to secure the remaining direct berths. Venezuela, Bolivia and Peru are still in the hunt for the playoff spot, though their chances are slimmer. Chile has already been eliminated and is undergoing a generational change after dropping its veteran stars.
