The Chinese People's Liberation Army's (PLA) Eastern Theater Command on Saturday strongly condemned the transit of Canadian and Australian warships through the Taiwan Straits, calling the move a provocation that undermines regional stability.
According to Senior Colonel Shi Yi, spokesperson for the theater command, the Canadian frigate Ville de Quebec and the Australian guided-missile destroyer Brisbane sailed through the Taiwan Straits on Saturday, "stirring up trouble and provoking incidents."
Shi said the PLA Eastern Theater Command has deployed naval and air forces to closely follow, monitor and guard against the passage and has taken effective measures to respond and handle the situation.
He warned that the actions of Canada and Australia sent the wrong signals and heightened security risks in the region.
Shi stressed that the PLA maintains a high state of readiness and will resolutely safeguard China's national sovereignty, security, and regional peace and stability.
