A Chinese mainland spokesperson emphasized that history will never be forgotten, commenting on a CGTN global poll which found that the majority of respondents recognize Taiwan's return to China as an outcome of China's victory in World War II.
Chen Binhua, spokesperson for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office, made the remarks during a press conference on Wednesday.
The poll, conducted by CGTN among 12,000 respondents from 40 countries, showed that 66.7 percent of the respondents are aware of the history of Taiwan's recovery. Most respondents said that Taiwan's return to China was an outcome of China's victory in World War II, and any secessionist actions constitute a denial of the war's outcome.
Chen said that the results demonstrated that history will never be forgotten, let alone tampered with. He reiterated that the Cairo Declaration and the Potsdam Proclamation provided crucial international legal foundations for Taiwan's restoration to China.
He stressed that although the two sides of the Taiwan Straits have not yet been reunified, China's sovereignty and territorial integrity have never been divided. The fact that the Chinese mainland and Taiwan belong to one China has never changed, he added.
Chen criticized Taiwan region's Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) authorities for engaging in what he called provocative moves aimed at secession. He said that their actions are attempts to alter the status quo in the Taiwan Straits, deny China's sovereignty, and challenge the post-war international order.
"We hope the international community will stand on the side of human progress and more broadly understand and support the Chinese people's just cause of opposing 'Taiwan independence' separatist activities and striving to achieve national reunification," Chen said.
