A Chinese mainland spokesperson on Wednesday accused Taiwan's Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) of recklessly expanding military expenditure and pursuing selfish interests at the expense of the island's well-being.

Chen Binhua, spokesperson for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office, made the remarks in response to media questions relevant to the Taiwan region's defense budget and the regional business community's opposition to the DPP authorities' cross-Straits policies during a regular press conference.

As for the reports that Taiwan's defense budget will reach more than 3 percent of local GDP next year, Chen said the DPP authorities are stubbornly clinging to their "Taiwan independence" separatist stance and attempting to seek independence by relying on external forces and by military means. He added that the DPP authorities are squandering the hard-earned money of the residents in the Taiwan region without limits at the mercy of external forces.

Such actions can neither bring security and peace nor protect Taiwan, but will only squeeze and undermine locals' livelihoods, jeopardizing present and future generations, Chen added.

As for the reports that relevant Taiwan authorities recently issued a white paper, which put forward proposals including easing cross-Straits exchanges and seizing opportunities in the mainland's market in a white paper, Chen said the white paper reflected the regional business community's concerns over the current situation in the Taiwan Straits and conveyed their skepticism and opposition to the DPP authorities' cross-Straits policies.

Noting the United States has imposed a 20 percent tariff on goods imported from the island, Chen said the tariff left many industries and enterprises on the island facing survival challenges.

For those industries and enterprises, the vast mainland market represents not only a way out of their difficulties but also an opportunity for sustained development, Chen added.

The two sides of the Taiwan Straits can jointly address external risks and challenges and strengthen the Chinese national economy by deepening integrated development and enhancing the level of industrial and supply chain cooperation, Chen said.

However, the DPP authorities, defying the laws of the market economy, persist in the delusion of "relying on the U.S. to resist China" and engage in activities that promote "decoupling and severing supply chains" across the Straits, Chen added.

In pursuit of their own partisan and selfish interests, the DPP authorities disregarded the survival of enterprises, which is bound to provoke public anger and lead to a complete loss of popular support, Chen said.
