China continued their unbeaten run at the Women's Asia Hockey Cup, following a convincing 2-0 victory over Japan in the opening contest of the Super 4s stage in Hangzhou on Wednesday.

This round, which serves as the second group phase, features a unique format distinct from the traditional knockout semifinals and finals. Under the revised system, the top two teams from each of the initial groups advance to a single round-robin pool. The top two finishers will then progress directly to the final, adding an extra layer of intensity to the competition.

China took control against Japan from the outset, breaking the deadlock in the 13th minute. Liu Chencheng delivered a precise pass to Zou Meirong, who capitalized on the opportunity to score her eighth goal of the tournament, giving the home side a crucial early lead.

The hosts maintained their dominance throughout the match, controlling possession and creating numerous scoring chances. Their persistence paid off when they finally converted on their fifth penalty corner opportunity, with Zhang Ying setting up Liu for a well-executed goal that doubled China's advantage.

Japan, fighting to get back into the contest, had multiple chances but failed to convert, missing three consecutive short corners in the final minute of the match. The final whistle blew with China clinching a 2-0 victory, extending their winning streak in the continental competition.

China will face India in their next Super 4s contest, while Japan meet South Korea, later on Thursday.
