China voices opposition to Mexico's planned 50% tariff on Chinese autos, other goods

China voiced opposition on Thursday after reports that Mexico is planning to impose a tariff of up to 50 percent on cars and other products imported from China and several other Asian countries.

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said China has always supported inclusive globalization and opposed unilateralism, protectionism, and discriminatory measures. 

He stressed that China firmly rejects restrictions imposed under external pressure that undermine its legitimate rights and will take necessary steps to safeguard its interests.

Lin noted that China and Mexico are both important members of the Global South, with mutually beneficial trade at the core of their economic ties. He said China values the development of relations with Mexico and hopes the two sides will work together to promote global economic recovery and trade growth.
