China unveils 3-year plan to boost new-type energy storage

China on Friday unveiled a plan to promote new-type energy storage between 2025 and 2027, amid support for green energy to stabilize the power grid.

The country aims to achieve over 180 million kilowatts of installed new-type energy storage capacity by 2027, which is expected to drive approximately 250 billion yuan (about $35.2 billion) in direct investment, according to the plan jointly released by China's National Development and Reform Commission and the National Energy Administration.

Such capacity can power roughly every household in the U.S.

The plan outlined 21 key measures, including scaling up energy storage applications in power plants and the grid, accelerating tech innovation, and improving standardization. It also emphasized talent development and international cooperation in the sector.

The move is part of China's broader push toward a green, low-carbon energy as well as high-quality development.

The plan builds on significant growth in the sector. At of the end of 2024, the country's installed capacity of new-type energy storage had reached 73.76 million kW, according to official data.
