Ex-chief justice becomes Nepal's interim prime minister

Nepal's former chief justice, Sushila Karki, took office as the prime minister of the interim government on Friday evening following KP Sharma Oli's resignation on Tuesday.

Karki was appointed to the post by President Ram Chandra Poudel and was then sworn in by the president in the presence of foreign envoys and other officials.

She is keeping all ministries under her charge, and her interim government is tasked with holding a general election within six months, according to the appointment letter read on the occasion.

Nepal's House of Representatives was dissolved, and a general election has been set for March 5, 2026, the presidential office said Friday. The dissolution took effect at 11 p.m., the office added.

Major political parties and groups that launched protests on September 8 and 9 in Kathmandu and other parts of the country reached a deal on Friday, resulting in Karki's appointment.

Aged 73, Karki is the first and only woman in Nepal to have served as chief justice of the Supreme Court.
