Wild horse herd heads for nature reserve in Dunhuang

China is transporting 28 Przewalski's horses on a journey of over 1,000 kilometers from the Gansu Endangered Animal Protection Center to the Dunhuang Xihu National Nature Reserve. Przewalski's horses are the last truly wild horses on Earth. 

These horses, once extinct in the wild, were reintroduced to China starting in 1985. After decades of careful breeding at centers like the one in Gansu, they are now returning to their natural habitat.

This is the third major release since 2010. When they arrive in Dunhuang, they'll join an existing population that's already thriving in the protected wetlands. It will increase the reserve's total number of wild horses to 212.

It's a long journey for these prehistoric horses, but one that symbolizes hope for endangered species everywhere.
