Zhao Jie and Zhang Jiale of China earned the women's hammer throw silver and bronze medals respectively at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo on Monday. Canadian defending champion Camryn Rogers retained the gold with a sensational throw of 80.51 meters.
The 26-year-old Olympic gold medalist started her series with 78.09 meters, a throw that would have ultimately been enough to win the competition. Nonetheless, the beauty came in round two when the Canadian broke the 80-meter barrier.
Young Chinese duo, 22-year-old Zhao and 18-year-old Zhang completed the podium, both throwing beyond 77 meters in the final round, recording their best efforts of the night. Zhao, the Olympic bronze medalist, added exactly one meter to her personal best, throwing 77.60 meters after Zhang threw 77.10.
"This year's world championships is a special experience for me, it's also my third world championships," Zhao said. "I made progress during these three editions in terms of my mindset and ability. As you can see all of my throws are above 75m, so I'm improving a lot. This is also my first time competing alongside my young compatriot, Zhang."
