For the first time in its history, the China-ASEAN Expo has dedicated areas for artificial intelligence (AI), new quality productive forces, the blue economy and foreign trade products.

Covering 160,000 square meters, this year's expo, which opened Wednesday in Nanning, the capital of south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, has attracted around 3,200 companies from 60 countries and regions.

A 10,000-square-meter AI pavilion – the largest single-theme hall included in the expo ever – features nearly 200 high-tech enterprises showcasing their latest innovations. More than half of the exhibits are either AI-related or AI-enabled. On opening day, the AI pavilion quickly became a major draw for visitors.

Among the highlights is an AI-assisted surgical robot designed for laparoscopic procedures. Operated remotely via 5G technology, the robot uses four mechanical arms for vision, cutting and hemostasis, suturing and gripping. With its precision, incisions have been reduced from the traditional 8-12 centimeters to just 0.8-1 cm, meaning less trauma and faster recovery for patients. The robot has already been trialed in several hospitals.

Also on display are two AI-powered robots designed for hazardous environments, such as those in the oil and gas industry. A wheeled explosion-proof inspection robot can patrol sites around the clock, with trials already underway in several ASEAN countries. Its upgraded humanoid version can not only perform inspections but also shut off valves and even repair leaks when gas is detected.

The expo also highlights advances in the low-altitude economy. A cargo aircraft with a range of 1,800 kilometers can make multiple trips between islands in Malaysia, underscoring how new possibilities opening up thanks to AI and emerging industries are creating fresh momentum for regional cooperation.

The theme of this year's expo, "Digital Intelligence and Innovation Empower Development – Leveraging China-ASEAN FTA 3.0 New Opportunities for an Even Closer China-ASEAN Community with a Shared Future," highlights the role of technology in boosting bilateral trade and cooperation.

Cambodian Permanent Deputy Prime Minister Vongsey Vissoth said that the theme underscores "the urgent need" for cooperation in building a region that is both prosperous and peaceful by leveraging digital technology and innovation, as well as promoting trade and investment.

Official data show that bilateral trade volumes have consistently risen, with China remaining ASEAN's largest trading partner for 16 consecutive years, while ASEAN has been China's largest trading partner for the past five years.
