The digital world is full of convenience but also risks. As cyberattacks become more sophisticated, a strong defense is necessary for every internet user.
This is a core message of China's annual Cybersecurity Week, which is taking place from September 15 to 21 this year, highlighting the public's role in security.
Here are simple steps to stay safer at home, at work, or on the go.
Personal devices
Your personal devices are ground zero for cyber threats. Trojans and malware can slip past your defenses, stealing data or tracking your location. They often get on your device through deceptive links or unofficial apps.
- Check security software: Make sure your antivirus and firewall are active and up-to-date.
- Monitor apps: Be suspicious of apps you don't remember installing. On your phone, review app permissions to see what data each can access.
- Keep software updated: Enable automatic updates for your operating system and apps for the latest security patches.
Home network
For many, the home is a hub of smart devices. The most common vulnerability is a weak password on your router. A hacker who compromises your router can see all your network traffic and take control of your devices.
- Change default passwords: The first step is to change default usernames and passwords on all new devices to something unique and complex.
- Hide your network name: Most routers let you hide your Wi-Fi name, making it less visible to intruders.
- Use strong encryption: Ensure your router uses WPA2 or WPA3 encryption.
Work and public spaces
Working from a local coffee shop means you're connected to networks you don't fully trust. An unsecured public Wi-Fi can let a hacker eavesdrop on your connection and intercept sensitive information.
- Use enterprise networking tools: These tools often encrypt your internet traffic, hiding your data from anyone listening in. It's an essential tool on public Wi-Fi.
- Avoid suspicious links: Phishing emails are a classic threat. Always double-check the sender's address and hover over links before you click them.
