At Meta's annual Connect event in Menlo Park, CEO Mark Zuckerberg unveiled the Meta Ray-Ban Display, the company's first consumer-ready smart glasses with an integrated display inside the lens.

The display features a small digital panel in the right lens for simple tasks like notifications; each pair comes with a wristband controller that converts hand gestures into commands. The glasses will be available in stores starting September 30.

Zuckerberg said the glasses represent a new way to access AI functions, allowing people to receive information while keeping their attention on their surroundings. He noted the device can support communication, memory, and perception. Meta described the product as part of its broader wearable strategy.

Partner EssilorLuxottica reported that revenue from Meta glasses more than tripled year-over-year and plans to start producing 10 million pairs annually beginning in 2026. The partner's wearables chief said the display model is the company's largest product launch so far.

The rollout experienced some technical glitches during demonstrations. Analysts note that smart glasses remain a niche market. Meta also faces competition from other tech companies and ongoing scrutiny over issues like child safety on its social media platforms.

Alongside the display, Meta introduced updated Ray-Ban models, the Oakley Meta Vanguard sport glasses, and new Quest 3 experiences – an effort to shift some computing functions from phones to wearable devices.
