ICRC vice president: Eroding respect for humanitarian law a key challenge in conflict zones

"The interpretation of international humanitarian law standards has been too permissive, too lax, and has resulted in a lot of suffering and a lot of destruction." Gilles Carbonnier, vice president of the International Committee of the Red Cross, warns that the erosion of humanitarian principles is leading to immense suffering. He stresses the urgent need to protect essential services like hospitals, water and electricity, and to make respect for international humanitarian law a political priority.
