Zhu Deyong, one of the most influential Chinese comic artists of his generation, is best known for works like "Uptown Singles" and "Battle Domestica," which shaped the way readers saw urban life and relationships. In an exclusive interview with CGTN, Zhu reflects on the deeper roots of his art and the world around him.
For Zhu, childhood memories are the key to understanding the self. "I believe our childhood holds the truest version of who we are," he says, "All the answers are there." Drawing, which began as instinctive joy, later became a form of therapy and a lifelong refuge.
As he observes the modern world, Zhu is unsettled. He says the big world should nourish the soul. But now, everything is utilitarian and commercial, feeding people's greed. In response, he chooses to "run away" as a pursuit of maintaining his authenticity.
Over the years, Zhu has tried to build what he calls his small world, a realm of painting, music and imagination.
"I believe the small world is incredibly important to everyone. One day, the big world might need the small worlds inside each of us to hold it together," Zhu said.
