Competing in her 10th World Championships, Gong Lijiao of China finished in ninth place in the women's shot put final in Tokyo on Saturday after throwing 18.96 meters. Her compatriot Zhang Linru ranked seventh with a best effort of 19.16 meters.
The gold medal went to Jessica Schilder of the Netherlands, whose top attempt went 20.29 meters. Chase Jackson of the USA earned silver at 20.21 meters, while Maddison-Lee Wesche of New Zealand matched her personal best of 20.06 meters to pick up bronze.
The three podium finishers were the only athletes to exceed the 20-meter mark in the final.

In another field event, Juleisy Angulo of Ecuador claimed the women's javelin title while setting a new national record of 65.12 meters. Silver medalist Anete Sietina extended her personal-best performance to 64.64 meters, and Mackenzie Little of Australia bagged bronze with a top throw of 63.58 meters.
Two Kenyan runners, Beatrice Chebet and Faith Kipyegon, engaged in a heated battle in a close women's 5,000 meter final. In the end, Chebet crossed the line first in 14:54.36 to top the podium. Kipyegon settled for runner-up honors in a season-best 14:55.07, while Italy's Nadia Battocletti ended up less than one second behind to round out the podium.
The men's 800 meter final was even more thrilling, with each of the top three finishers crossing the line in less than one minute and 42 seconds. Kenyan champion Emmanuel Wanyonyi clocked a new World Championships record of 1:41.86. Djamel Sedjati of Algeria snagged silver in season-best 1:41.90, just 0.05 seconds ahead of Canada's Marco Arop, who took home bronze.
