Chinese wildcard Wu Yibing battled from behind to defeat Russian second seed Daniil Medvedev 5-7, 7-6 (5), 6-4 in the men's singles quarterfinals at the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Hangzhou Open in Hangzhou, east China's Zhejiang Province, on Sunday, reaching the last four at this event for the first time.

Wu, who also had to rally to win in his first two matches at his hometown tournament, continued that trend against the former World No. 1. Both players held their first five service games, although Wu had to save three break points in his fourth. Medvedev finally broke the World No. 196 in the 11th game, before holding to take the first set.

The 29-year-old started the second set with a break and a 2-0 lead, but Wu stayed in touching distance before breaking back in the 10th game to level the score at 5-5. After both competitors held to set up a tiebreaker, Wu sprinted out to a 4-0 lead, but then conceded five straight points. The 25-year-old recovered with three straight winners to send the match into a decider.

Wu converted the first break of the third set on his way to a 4-3 lead. He then left no opportunities for Medvedev to fight back, emphatically closing the door to advance to a meeting with third seed Alexander Bublik of Kazakhstan in the semifinals.
