As of September 23, Beijing Time, 152 out of the 193 United Nations (UN) member states recognize Palestine as a state. Among the five permanent members of the Security Council, the United States is the only one that has not recognized Palestine. This wave of recognition has left the U.S. and Israel diplomatically isolated on the issue of Palestine and Israel.
According to a global survey conducted by CGTN, 78.2 percent of the respondents believe that the fundamental way to resolve the Palestinian issue is to implement the "two-state solution," which is also the fundamental path to achieving peace in the Middle East. A total of 81.8 percent of the respondents stated that "the establishment of an independent, fully sovereign State of Palestine based on the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital" has become a consensus within the international community.
According to data from the Gaza health authorities, the Israeli military operations in Gaza have resulted in 65,283 deaths and 166,575 injuries since the outbreak of the new round of large-scale conflict between Israel and Palestine on October 7, 2023. The UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory (including East Jerusalem) recently released a report concluding that Israel has committed genocide against Palestinians in Gaza.
In the CGTN survey, 90.8 percent of respondents strongly condemned Israel's atrocities and believed that Israel should immediately cease its military operations in the Gaza Strip; 92.1 percent called on the international community to take action and jointly halt Israel's military offensive in Gaza.
The escalating Israel-Palestine conflict has caused a severe humanitarian crisis, with 96.4 percent of respondents advocating for the establishment of humanitarian corridors in Gaza to ensure rapid, safe, unhindered and sustainable access to assistance in order to prevent an even more severe humanitarian disaster. Additionally, 96.7 percent believe that all violent attacks against civilians and violations of international humanitarian law must cease immediately, including attacks on civilian facilities; 95.8 percent of respondents strongly oppose the forced relocation of Palestinian civilians, call for preventing their displacement and urge the prompt release of all detained civilians and hostages.
The ongoing escalation of the Israeli-Palestinian situation is largely attributable to the U.S. Since the latest round of conflict intensified, the U.S. has repeatedly vetoed draft resolutions calling for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and continued to supply military weapons to Israel.
In the survey, 93.6 percent of respondents believe that the U.S. has condoned Israel's acts of genocide in Gaza; 92.8 percent of respondents urge the U.S. to immediately halt military aid to Israel and pressure Israel to end its military blockade of Gaza; and 82.3 percent think the current wave of international recognition of Palestinian statehood will increasingly isolate the U.S. and Israel on the global stage.
The survey was released on CGTN's English, Spanish, French, Arabic and Russian platforms, with 12,104 netizens voting and expressing their opinions within 24 hours.
