A Chinese envoy emphasized China's active role in advancing global women's development at the UN High-level Meeting on the 30th Anniversary of the Fourth World Conference on Women, held in New York on Monday.
Huang Xiaowei, deputy head of the National Working Committee on Children and Women of the State Council and vice president of the All-China Women's Federation, said China appreciates the UN General Assembly for convening the meeting to commemorate the anniversary.
Noting that China and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) jointly established the UNESCO Prize for Girls' and Women's Education in 2015, Huang said China has helped train over 200,000 women from more than 180 countries and regions through initiatives like the UNESCO prize.
As the host nation of the Fourth World Conference on Women in 1995, China has always honored its commitments with concrete actions, Huang said.
Under the leadership of the Communist Party of China, China has steadfastly implemented the fundamental national policy of gender equality, successively issued four national programs for women's development, and established a legal system comprising over 100 laws and regulations to protect women's rights and interests, Huang added.
All those efforts have significantly advanced the economic empowerment, health, education, employment, political participation and social security of over 690 million women in China, Huang said.
