Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Tuesday met with a U.S. congressional delegation led by Representative Adam Smith in Beijing, describing the trip as an "ice-breaking journey" for China-U.S. relations. The trip marks the first visit to China by a delegation of U.S. House members since 2019.

Wang, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, said the visit brings voices from U.S. political parties and reflects the American people's expectations for stable ties.

He expressed hope that the trip would help Washington gain an accurate understanding of China, approach differences rationally, and explore cooperation to advance the stable, healthy and sustainable growth of bilateral relations.

Underscoring that China and the U.S. are partners, not adversaries, Wang called for enhanced dialogue to avoid misconceptions and confrontation, while expanding mutually beneficial cooperation.

On the Taiwan question, the Chinese foreign minister reaffirmed that it is an internal matter of China and stressed that safeguarding peace in the Taiwan Straits requires firm opposition to "Taiwan secessionists."
