When you think of Sanya in southern China's Hainan Province, you might imagine a scenic coastline, cool coconut juice and tasty Wenchang chicken. Still, this tropical paradise offers a lot more. In recent years, many international visitors have been attracted to Sanya – not just for the great weather, but to experience the "mysterious Eastern power" of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). This oasis is quickly becoming a top spot for health and wellness, especially through TCM.

Leading this transformation are the Sanya Hospital of TCM and the Sanya International Friendship Sanatorium of TCM, which combine ancient healing methods with modern medical innovations to serve an international clientele. Since 2002, they have pioneered the idea of "medical tourism" in TCM, integrating health with travel. The facilities have welcomed over 100,000 international visitors, providing personalized treatment plans that include acupuncture, herbal remedies, dietary guidance, and wellness tourism activities, ensuring a holistic approach to both physical and mental well-being.

"Patients from France, for instance, can send their medical records to us," said Zheng Peng, Deputy Director at the Sanya International Friendship Sanatorium of TCM. "Our hospital can then provide remote diagnoses."
The hospital operates overseas TCM centers in Kazakhstan and Canada, along with four AI telemedicine platforms connecting TCM to Russia, North America, Europe, and Africa. In 2025 alone, they have hosted 6,711 foreign guests so far.

"By leveraging technology, we can expand and promote TCM to a broader audience," Zheng added. Alongside the AI consultation system, a moxibustion robot is used for patient treatment. Moxibustion is a 2,000-year-old practice that involves the controlled burning of mugwort – an herb known for its warming properties – to apply gentle heat to acupoints along the body's meridians. This technique aims to balance Qi (vital energy) and blood flow. The moxibustion robot could potentially replace a human practitioner in identifying treatment areas and regulating the heat of the herb, showing how ancient methods can be employed with advanced technology.

Aleksei, a business owner from Barnaul, Russia, is visiting Hainan for the second time. On his first trip, he enjoyed the beaches, but this time, he is here for TCM. "I have some issues with my neck and back," he said. "My friends told me about this hospital, and many people are discussing it on social media, so I came for treatment. I started four days ago with massage and acupuncture, and I feel much better today. I believe if I continue for another four days, I'll improve even more."

Aleksei shared his experience with acupuncture, an ancient TCM practice that involves inserting thin needles into specific points on the body to stimulate the flow of Qi. "The acupuncture doesn't hurt much; I can tolerate it," he said. "The doctors first identified my problem before treating that spot – it worked well!" As holistic health becomes more popular, acupuncture is increasingly seen as a complementary therapy that mixes ancient wisdom with modern healthcare.

As the Hainan Free Trade Port (FTP) prepares to launch its new customs operations, this pilot free trade zone stands at a pivotal point of global attention, with new policies aimed at improving access for international patients seeking medical treatment.
"The FTP is bringing great convenience to foreign friends," Zheng said. "Additionally, 85 countries are eligible for visa-free entry to Hainan Province, making it easier for foreign visitors to come to our institution and gain a comprehensive understanding of TCM."
These policies aim to make access to TCM services easier, helping Sanya become a more appealing destination for health and wellness retreats.
"Coming to Hainan without a visa is amazing," Aleksei said. "I just need my passport, take a flight, and I can be here – it's very convenient. The doctors, nurses and translators here are very friendly. My Chinese and English aren't that good, so the translators make communication so much easier, which is really important for medical treatment."

Furthermore, China's Belt and Road Initiative has broadened Hainan's prospects. As a strategic center in the South China Sea, Hainan plays a crucial role as a connector between China, Southeast Asia, and Indian Ocean countries.
