China's cutting-edge nuclear fusion device, known as BEST, on Monday hoisted and installed the Dewar base, signaling the official entry of this national strategic heavyweight into the new phase of main machine assembly.
This significant progress brings China one step closer to its ambitious goal of harnessing nuclear fusion for power generation. As a landmark project in the global nuclear fusion field, BEST is poised to make history by becoming the first device in the world to verify and demonstrate nuclear fusion power generation on a practical scale.

According to the project team, the completion of the Dewar base hoisting lays a solid foundation for the subsequent assembly of core components of the BEST device. A key part of the fusion device, the Dewar serves as a super-insulated container that maintains the ultra-low temperature environment required for nuclear fusion reactions, making its precise installation critical to the overall performance and safety of the device.
What makes BEST stand out on the international stage is its clear and pioneering objective to realize nuclear fusion power generation. If all goes according to plan, this groundbreaking device is expected to achieve a historic feat: lighting up the first light bulb using nuclear fusion-generated electricity by 2030.
Nuclear fusion, often hailed as the "ultimate clean energy source," mimics the process that powers the sun, producing massive amounts of energy without generating long-lived radioactive waste or greenhouse gas emissions. The demonstration of fusion power generation by BEST would not only be a major technological leap for China but also a significant contribution to the global effort to address climate change and achieve sustainable energy security.
