History flows through bloodlines. Centuries ago, the Guo clan – descended from Fenyang City in Shanxi Province – journeyed southward, settling in Xiamen City, Fujian Province, before branches crossed the sea to Taiwan and later spread to Europe, America and Southeast Asia. Today, Guo Yicheng, born in Taipei and now a professor of Chinese culture and art in Beijing, retraces that ancestral path.
On the Loess Plateau, he strums the guitar to a poem that echoes the voice of his forefathers; on the shores of Xiamen, he sings the song "Across That Mountain" towards Taiwan. His steps weave together memory and homeland, personal longing and collective heritage.
CGTN's original documentary "Returning Roots: A Journey Across the Straits" tells this story – of roots rediscovered, of family and kinship enduring across the Taiwan Straits, and of the unity that binds the Chinese nation as one.
