China activated a Level-IV national disaster relief emergency response on Sunday as Typhoon Matmo – the 21st named storm of the 2025 Pacific typhoon season – battered the southern provinces of Guangdong and Hainan, according to the country's Ministry of Emergency Management.

An additional 20,000 disaster relief supply items have been sent to Guangdong and Hainan, and 10,000 items to Guangxi. The supplies include folding beds, moisture-proof mats, and family emergency kits.

According to local authorities, approximately 347,000 people have been evacuated in Guangdong and Hainan for safety reasons.

China operates a four-tier emergency response system, with Level I indicating the highest level of severity.
