China's Yuan Yue dug deep to open her WTA Wuhan Open campaign, edging Italy's Lucia Bronzetti in two nervy tiebreaks. The World No. 69 prevailed 7‑6(2), 7‑6(1) after a 2‑hour‑21‑minute tussle dominated by lengthy rallies; she now meets seventh‑seeded Jasmine Paolini in the next round.

Japan's Uchijima Moyuka, who had already knocked out Alexandra Eala and Yuan's compatriot Wang Xiyu in qualifying, carried that momentum into the main draw, beating another Chinese Wang Xinyu 6‑4, 7‑6(6).

Wang Xinyu, who fought back from 5‑3 down in the second set to lead 6‑5, was in tears after the loss. "This Chinese swing has been much tougher than I expected, especially mentally," she admitted. "I met problems I hadn't faced before, not only technical ones, but also the pressure the opponent imposed on court. Too often I end up inventing extra problems for myself; it becomes a fight with myself."

Meanwhile, Russia's Ekaterina Alexandrova moved through comfortably with a 6‑3, 6‑2 win over Canada's Victoria Mboko, and 10th seed Clara Tauson of Denmark defeated Serbia's Olga Danilovic 6‑3, 7‑5.
