Chinese envoy outlined China's views on upholding international law and strengthening global governance on Thursday at the 80th Session of the UN General Assembly's Sixth Committee on "Rule of Law at the National and International Levels."
Geng Shuang, China's deputy permanent representative to the United Nations, said the world is entering a new period of turbulence and transformation, where hegemonic behavior and unilateral actions are undermining the basic principles of international law, including sovereign equality and non-interference in internal affairs. He warned that the politicization and instrumentalization of international law have heightened risks to global governance and the international order.
He outlines six points to uphold the international rule of law and strengthen global governance.
Geng emphasized that the purposes and principles of the UN Charter form the core of international rule of law and the universally recognized norms guiding international relations.
He called for respect for civilizational diversity and legal pluralism in global lawmaking, ensuring equal participation of all countries and a stronger voice for the Global South.
Upholding sovereign equality and honoring treaty obligations in good faith are essential, he said, while urging the international community to advance rule-making in emerging and non-traditional security fields to create frameworks that address real needs and serve shared interests.
He also underscored the importance of peaceful dispute resolution, noting that mediation is explicitly provided for in the UN Charter.
"China is ready to work with all nations to uphold the UN Charter and UN principles, safeguard an international order based on law, practice true multilateralism, improve global governance, and advance the democratization and rule of law in international relations, contributing to the building of a community with a shared future for humanity," said Geng.
