Hetian in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region was once famous for its exquisite jade, but local processing capacity long lagged behind. Today, thanks to strong support for local specialty industries, that picture is changing. Even at the foot of the Kunlun Mountains – where some of the finest jade originates – the complete production chain, from mining and design to carving and sales, is taking shape right at home.
